Design

An excellent kitchen design is the foundation that will determine the quality of, and client satisfaction with, the end result. I work with my clients to create a design that matches their personal desires and functional needs, and which enhances their home’s attractiveness and value.

After the in-home consultation, the next step is the design of the kitchen space. This will define:

• The functional layout of the kitchen, for example the locations and types of appliances and plumbing fixtures, the cabinet dimensions, features, and inserts, as well as

• The visual style of the kitchen, including cabinet door styles, closed vs. open cabinets or floating shelves, hood design, etc.

To create an excellent design, the designer needs to take time to understand the client’s desires and needs, as well as the physical and visual context of the space that the kitchen will occupy within their home.

While most of the resources that I recommend for cabinetry offer to create a kitchen design for their clients, in my experience the quality of their design varies widely. It depends on the skills and experience of the salesperson; how much time they take to understand the client’s desires, needs, and home; how willing they are to make revisions, and ultimately what amount of sales pressure they are under.

As an independent consultant, I offer design services free of any sales pressure, and without locking a client in with one provider. The in-home consultation, combined with my skills and experience, is an excellent basis for me to work with a client on their design. Therefore, many of my in-home consultation clients decide to hire me to design their kitchen.

My completed set of drawings will include detailed floor plans, elevations, and perspective renderings. They include dimensions, labels to describe cabinet inserts, and other relevant information. They allow cabinet vendors and makers, countertop vendors, plumbing showrooms, as well as contractors to provide quotes.
